The 1980s turned out to be full of changes, not only socially, but also for the auto industry of the USSR. Then, projects of cars were developed that could claim the title of the best in the whole world, nevertheless, the general public did not find out about them. In this review, we present a dozen of these machines.

1. Moskvich-2143 "Yauza"

A similar fate befell the Yauzu sedan - model 2141. Looking at the car now, you understand that it could safely claim the 1st place in the "stupidest windows" nomination - the upper part of the windows was motionless, and only the lower ones remained functional. At that time, a total of 3 cars were assembled.

In the late 80s, this development had all the chances to go into series. This SUV had a high level of safety and maneuverability, and was also very comfortable. The basis of the car was a reinforced metal body with light fiberglass panels, and under the hood was a Tavria engine. The car could pick up speed up to 130 km / h. Engineers created a wonderful family-type SUV with great potential, which was rejected in Moscow, which is why it did not get into mass production.

3. Moskvich-2139 "Arbat"

In the 80s, the management of the Moskvich plant decided to replace the outdated model 2140 with something more recent. A group of engineers developed and proposed several projects at once, which radically changed the situation for a decade to come. The following three cars were among those very "ideas".

The 2139 model called "Arbat" could well become a family minivan of domestic production. The car had a seven-seater salon with a transformation function and a multifunctional steering wheel. But, unfortunately, the novelty has remained to exist exclusively as a concept car.

4. US 0288 "Compact"

This car in a single version is the result of the work of the NAMI Institute. When assembling the car, technologies were used, most of which were new to the Soviet auto industry. "Compact" was equipped with a computer that controlled the suspension, and an updated engine from "Tavria". The car was "powered" by both hydrogen and gasoline, had a low fuel consumption - only 5, 4 liters. If the fate of "Compact" had turned out differently, and it would have entered the series, it would undoubtedly become a serious rival for Daewoo Matiz.

5. US "Okhta"

Like the previous model, the "Hunt" was assembled in the amount of one unit. This car accommodated seven passengers and had a transforming salon. For example, the front seats rotated 180 °, which turned the familiar interior into a comfortable compartment. And when there was a need to transport goods, the seats of the second and third rows could be removed - then the minivan was transformed into a van.

For those times, the design of the car was very futuristic. A streamlined body and an impressive glass area, low headlights and automatic spoiler extension at speed - then all this was very unusual.

6. Moskvich-2144 "Istra"

Of all that was invented by AZLK in its plans until 2000, the most plausible was the 2144 model - "Istra". The body of the car was made of aluminum, and its side door swung open like a sports car - upwards - and gave free entrance to an interesting salon. There was a lot of unusual things inside. For example, the speed of the car was reflected on the windshield, and data from the night vision camera was also displayed here. The engineers also thought about the safety of the car - there are both ABS on the brakes and belts with airbags. The comfort of passengers was provided by a split system, which compensated for the inability to open the windows, but small vents remained in effect.

With the collapse of the country, work on Istra, Yauza and Arbat stopped, and besides them, many projects with great potential turned out to be abandoned.

7. ZIL-4102

The model was developed at the direction of Gorbachev himself and was supposed to replace the outdated ZIL-41041. To this end, a completely new Rolls-Royce was purchased in the UK for a thorough analysis. But in the development of their car, they relied not only on the purchase, they also looked towards the American limousines and the Volvo 760 sedans.

Having collected enough information, by the 88th year, two copies of the ZIL-4102 were presented. The new version had serious differences from its "ancestor", even its design was more strict and "democratic". The car turned out to be frameless, most of the outer panels of the new ZIL were made of fiberglass. It was endowed with an 8-cylinder V-shaped engine of 7.68 liters, with a capacity of 315 horses. Fuel consumption varied in the range of 18-21 liters for every 100 km.

The interior of the car was very comfortable and free, it was covered with white leather, decorated with carpets with leopard print and ennobled with wood. The representative assembly option, among other things, had many additional options. However, despite all the efforts of the developers, Gorbachev did not like the car, so the project was closed.

8. VAZ-2702 "Pony"

In the 70s, in order to transport even an insignificant cargo, it was necessary to drive a 3-ton truck to the entrance. And it was very inconvenient - a minimum of work and a maximum of fuel consumption, which unpleasantly hit both the finances and the ecology of cities.

To solve this pressing problem, the VAZ plant developed a very compact car for distribution purposes, which ran on electricity, and gave it the self-explanatory name "Pony". The first "foal" was born in 1984. The aluminum body made the car very light, but at the same time unreliable. For this reason, despite all the prospects of the project, the concept of "Pony" did not advance.

9. ZIL-118 "Youth"

The bus was developed in the 60s, and ZIL-111 was chosen as the base. At the time, it was an exceptional car - compared to existing buses, it was distinguished by a smooth ride and amazing comfort. Despite its considerable size, the bus moved almost like a passenger car. All this was ensured by the fact that the ZIL-118 was equipped with an engine from a truck, the power of which was abundant.

Cars were assembled exclusively under the order of the KGB, in the role of ambulance transport for special people and for television broadcasters. In the period 1963-94, only 93 cars left the assembly line.

10. MAZ-2000 "Perestroika"

The loud debut of the outstanding truck of the domestic auto industry fell on 1988, the show took place in Paris. MAZ-2000 was a project of Minsk engineers, who thereby demonstrated a personal vision of long-range transport in the 2000s. They called their concept simply - "Perestroika". The tractor turned out to be very unusual - its cab was securely attached to the van, it had an absolutely flat floor, a high ceiling and a large panoramic glass. The developers also took care of the comfort of the drivers, placing everything in the cab, from a radio with a table to a refrigerator, stove and TV. Just imagine - all this, and on the car of those times!

The traction module was disconnected from the cab and rotated relative to it due to hydraulic cylinders. The concept car has a diesel 6-cylinder engine from MAN with 290 hp. Improved aerodynamics allowed the car to pick up speed up to 120 km / h. The truck had independent air suspension and brakes with ABS. The engineers worked very actively on the creation of the truck and at that time two test samples were assembled.

The possibility of combining several trailers was being worked out, which would form a road train, the carrying capacity of which would reach 80 tons. Unfortunately, the collapse of the country led to the fact that the project was quickly closed, and all patents and developments were sold to Western firms.
