Many of those who have their own summer cottage prefer to leave the winter crops in order to collect the first harvest in the spring. One of the most popular crops for such planting can be safely considered onion. However, you can't just take and plant a popular vegetable. In order for the harvest to be really strong, there are a few things that must be done first. So, before starting work, it would be nice to stock up not only onion sets, but also some sand.

Experienced summer residents strongly recommend choosing a garden bed for planting onions according to the following criteria: first - before that some fundamentally different crop grew on it (best if it was potatoes or tomatoes), second - the place for planting winter crops should be as dry and sunny as possible. In the selected area, you will need to dig up the ground well before planting.

In order for the onion harvest to be good, compost and ash should be added to the ground. Humus is less effective fertilizer. In general, planting winter onions is not much different from planting winter garlic. Having prepared the soil, we begin to make the garden bed. To do this, we make bows with a peg. The depth of the hole should be such that after planting the neck of the bulb is 2-3 cm below the ground level. The distance between the holes is 10 cm. The distance between the rows of the onion is 25 cm.

Before planting onions in the seed holes, be sure to pour a tablespoon of sand (preferably river). It will act as a drain to keep the bulb from rotting. Another spoonful of sand should be poured onto the onion after planting it in the hole. After planting all the rows, the land is leveled. Before the onset of the first cold weather, the beds should be covered with mulch to protect winter crops. It is best to use hay, fallen leaves, or raspberry branches.
