Coming soon in a Dutch town Rotterdam a grandiose complex will open its doors, which is a hybrid of a covered market and a residential building. In this country, it will be the first project of its kind.

Firm architects MVRDV are now working on a project called Markthal Rotterdam … The 11-storey building resembles a giant hangar with a total area of 100,000 square meters.
To date, the construction of the complex is almost complete. Artists Arno Coenen, Iris Roskam Together with a group of designers, they brightly decorated the inner walls of the arched vaults, calling their composition "Cornucopia".

Most of this complex will be occupied by an indoor market. It is planned to place about 100 food sectors under the arch, in which only fresh products will be sold. And the premises of the first floor of the building itself will house shops, restaurants, eateries and even a culinary school.

The original architectural solution was the construction of residential apartments over the retail area. 200 apartments are located from 2 to 10 floors. In addition to retail space and residential premises, the complex has a supermarket, a logistics center for entrepreneurs and a parking lot on the underground level.

The Markthal Rotterdam is slated to open in October 2014.
Another market concept will soon be implemented by SPARK Architects. But this time it will not be covered, but floating market "Solar Orchid".
