It's no secret that over time, the interior of the apartments needs updating. The wallpaper is glued, the walls are leveled and painted, the floor covering is changing, etc. But what about the furniture? Over the years, scratches appear on it, the polish fades, small children leave their mark on it in the form of drawings or stickers, which are very difficult to get rid of. Not everyone can afford to buy new furniture after each repair, so you need to find a way to restore it, or even modernize it. There is such a way - upholstery with fabric. It not only helps to hide flaws, but also perfectly adapts old furniture to the new interior design.
Step 1: cut out the template
Spread thick paper on the floor, from which the template will be made, put the drawer of the chest of drawers on it with the front wall down, circle it along the contour and cut it out. Fold the template in half.
Make a second, slightly larger template to transfer to the fabric. Here you need to consider the edges of the drawers, as well as how much you want to wrap the fabric from the inside.
Step 2: Cover the box with batting
Take the first template and fold it about 1 cm on each side. Cut out this reduced batting template. You can use thin or thick batting as you wish.
Apply hot glue in several strips to the surface of the box, starting from the edge. Do not apply glue to the handle attachment holes in the surface of the drawer.
Resize the batting by trimming it if it gets too close to the edges. Do not be discouraged if you make a mistake in the markup and there is not enough batting. You can cut off another strip and glue it where it is missing.
Step 3: decorate with fabric
Remove all handles from the dresser drawers. Spread the fabric on the surface of the box, smooth it, make sure that there is enough fabric for the fold along the edges of the box on each side. Take an awl, knitting needle or other thin object, screw the screw into the hole for the handle from the inside of the box.
With the sharp end of an awl or knitting needle, feel the tip of the screw and pierce the fabric in this place, turn the awl or knitting needle to slightly widen the hole in the fabric. Insert the handle into the hole and secure it. Thus, make as many holes as necessary, depending on the type of handle.
Then apply a drop of hot glue to the edges of the drawer and flatten the fabric so it doesn't wrap or twist. Do this on four sides to hold the fabric in place for ease of use.
Step 4: finishing the corners
You have to tinker a bit with the corners. Continue to apply hot glue droplets to the top of the drawer rib as you work towards the corner, spread the glue so that no drips remain stuck. When you reach the corner, glue the fabric on both sides of it. It is better to use a dense, coarse fabric, canvas, upholstery fabric so that no droplets of glue are noticeably frozen. You will get a triangle of fabric sticking out of the corner.
Apply quite a bit of glue to the inside of the corner and fold the fabric triangle down. On the inside of the drawer, press the fabric triangle firmly, grease the cut edges generously with glue and fix them well. Try to alternate the folds so that there are 2 on the top / bottom and 2 on the sides, otherwise the drawer can go very tightly into the dresser. Glue the corners clockwise so you don't miss any of them.
Step 5: glue the rest of the pieces and process with tape
Once you're done with the corners, carefully inspect the edges of the fabric so that they fit snugly around the edges of the drawer ribs. If the fabric is bristling somewhere or there is excess of it, cut it off with sharp scissors. Glue the neatly folded edge of the fabric around the entire perimeter. Apply glue only under the fabric. Then glue the silk tape around the perimeter to hide the trimmed edges of the fabric. Remember to melt the edges of the tape so that it does not start to fray.
Step 6: Reinstall the boxes
Put the drawers back in place, having previously painted or polished the base of the chest of drawers, if necessary. The chest of drawers is ready! Refresh the interior of the room and surprise your friends with exclusive handmade furniture.
