In the 1980s, South Korea built a 328-foot flagpole at Daeseong-dong, very close to the North Korean border. Then the North Koreans decided to put their own flagpole even higher, and just a mile before the entrance to the "propaganda village" in the demilitarized zone. This structure is still considered the tallest fortified flagpole in the world. It is 525 feet high. Obviously, when it rains, the flag has to be lowered, because the structure cannot support the weight of the huge wet banner.

Colossal at 430 feet, this flagpole is the tallest free-standing flagpole in the world. It is located on the coast of Jordan and can be seen from Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Jordan can also count on a silver prize for the highest free-standing flagpole. 416 feet, earthquake resistant, visible from 16 miles and holding a 200 by 130 feet flag. The canvas weighs 190,000 pounds, took two years to design and build, and is capable of withstanding gusts of wind up to 90 mph.
