Design firm MAD Architects has unveiled a futuristic concept for Jiaxing, China. The new Community Center is planned to be built next to the previously developed railway station. Together they will have to form a magnificent architectural ensemble that will become a decoration of the city. The main attraction of the Jiaxing Civic Center will be the undulating roof, which unites an area of 130 thousand square meters. m, softness and grace, resembling the streams of water in an ancient canal passing nearby.
Design bureau MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong, has developed a new project for the Chinese city of Jiaxing. This time, they presented the concept of a large-scale Civic Center (Jiaxing Civic Center), more like an art object thanks to the sculpted roof, which will unite three city-wide structures at once - the Museum of Science and Technology, the Youth Center and the Center for the Activity of Women and Children. The new multifunctional structure will be a logical continuation of the impressive arrangement of the Jiaxing Central Park area, next to which MAD Architects plans to build a futuristic train station.
The Jiaxing Civic Center project is conceived as a large-scale architectural complex that will occupy a staggering 130 thousand square meters. m, but at the same time it will be harmoniously integrated into the park and coastal areas. It was the latter circumstance that predetermined the shape of the roof, which should resemble the movement of water in a channel connecting Taihu Lake and the Qiantang River.
Despite the huge area of the object, the designers decided to combine different volumes under the winding roof band, which will become a kind of umbrella over the walking areas and help create a single horizon. Considering that the roof will have graceful and soft curves of different heights, shapes and angles of inclination, visitors to the center or passers-by walking in the city park will be able to observe a dynamic picture, because from whatever point they look at it, the variability of the structure is clearly visible.
By placing buildings under a continuous roof, the developers hope to create a sense of consistency, while improving functionality, energy efficiency and avoiding duplication, according to Novate.ru.
The circular lawn in the center of the complex will become the main connecting element of the project, creating an open and dynamic urban space, allowing the architectural object to gradually dissolve into the picturesque landscape beyond. At the same time, all levels of the complex will be greened as much as possible, up to the creation of small park islands on the last floors of the center.
The project provides for a close connection with the landscape of the first tier of the ensemble, which will look like a semi-open space and will be used for large-scale urban events in the open air, and in everyday life - as a walking area. The central green "stage" will be connected to the subsequent levels of the complex using a wave-like structure that forms a 350-meter landscape corridor, which can be used as both a pedestrian crossing and a jogging track. There are winding paths starting from the encircling terrace, some going through some parts of the buildings, and others leading to the city park, where you can walk among the wilderness.
To preserve the integrity of the architectural ensemble's structures, all three objects with different functions are connected in series under a wavy and curved roof. At the same time, spaces for organizing exhibitions, conducting theatrical performances, educational rooms, entertainment areas for different age categories and other objects will organically complement each other.
Note: It is worth noting that the project was developed with an accurate reference to the terrain and all mature trees will be fully preserved. Thanks to intelligent integration, once the construction is completed, the park area will immediately be able to receive visitors, all that remains is to take care of landscaping the lawns and hills. The city authorities intend to implement the project of the Jiaxing Community Center and even set a deadline for the completion of construction. The grandiose art facility is expected to open at the end of 2023.
