Everyone who served in the army had to hold the famous bayonet-knife from a Kalashnikov assault rifle. All the rest, even without service in the troops, have probably heard that this instrument of war and economy is distinguished by the absence of any sharpness at all. From this, many have a reasonable question: why is the bayonet so stupid?

This knife is frankly dull
This knife is frankly dull

In fact, the answer to this question is literally on the surface. The bayonet-knife for the Kalashnikov assault rifle was adopted by the USSR Armed Forces in 1965 as a combined-arms bayonet for the AK-74 and AKM. The product was produced at the Tula Arms and Izhevsk Mechanical Plants until it was replaced by a more advanced 6x5 bayonet-knife. However, even today 6x4 is widely used in the armies of different countries, as it was produced in huge quantities.

Not only a bayonet, but also a tool
Not only a bayonet, but also a tool

The absence of any intelligible sharpening in the 6x4 bayonet-knife is explained by the fact that it is primarily a bayonet - a spearhead that perfectly pierces flesh and clothing without sharpening. Moreover, if sharpened 6x4, then due to the quality of the metal, it may eventually break. In addition, any sharpening is directly harmful to the knife also due to the fact that it is a very specific auxiliary engineering tool.

Together with the scabbard, the 6x4 bayonet can be used for cutting wires and barbed wire, as well as for opening zinc with cartridges. In addition, the tool can be used as a hammer, ax, torch. Finally, it is used as a tip for a hunting spear. Sharpening is not required for all these tasks. Only combat tactical and utility knives are sharpened in the army.
