In the light of recent events, the most relevant and acceptable is a secluded vacation in the bosom of nature, even if the soul asks for a large company and noisy festivities. And such a place could be Villa Vals, created inside a picturesque slope in the Swiss Alps. Fantastic air, silence, beauty, comfort and an amazing view from the window, even though all the premises of a private hotel are located completely underground. For those who do not believe that this is possible, we offer to look together into the amazing apartments that will provide an unforgettable vacation and help to imagine the life of a modern caveman.
Among the fragrant alpine meadows on one of the picturesque slopes, you can see a strange object resembling a plate that covers a gigantic burrow. But looking for forest fairies or hobbits in the depths of the hill is not worth it, but you will definitely succeed in relaxing in luxurious conditions in the lap of nature.
Hidden deep underground is a unique private hotel called Villa Vals, built back in 2009. It is located near the mountain village of Vals at an altitude of 1,250 meters above sea level, in the depths of the valley of the same name, which is famous for the Therme Vals ski resort and unique thermal springs.
It is difficult to imagine a better option for integrating a luxurious three-level mansion into the natural landscape than Villa Vals, located underground. The development of this project was carried out by specialists from the architectural companies SeARCH and CMA and despite the fact that they had to develop an underground facility for the first time, they were able to create a stable structure, harmoniously integrated into the landscape. It is also worth noting that during the construction it was possible not to disturb the relief of the natural hill, even though it had to go deeper by 8 meters.
During the construction of the 225 sq. m, traditional technologies and local building materials were used, including an impressive façade. It was laid out from Valser quartzite extracted from nearby thermal springs. It was also used as a ceiling of the upper level, which was covered with earth and sod with grass.
An interesting decision was to introduce the construction of a two-level barn, which serves as an entrance to the house. Moreover, it can only be accessed through a 22-meter concrete tunnel leading from the village. Thanks to this organization of the entrance, the residence itself is perceived as a long-awaited light at the end of the tunnel.
Despite the extraordinary location, in front of the villa there is a spacious stone courtyard, where there is a seating area, a place for grilling with a firebox, a natural spring with crystal clear water and even a Dutch bath with the opportunity to splash under the starry sky. But it is not worth worrying that someone will become an uninvited guest, or fall on your head. In order to protect both those walking along the slope, who certainly may not notice that there is a residential mansion under their feet, and the guests resting in the courtyard, it was decided to fence off the entire circumference of the facade.
It is worth noting that the concave facade of the house opens into the courtyard, which looks more like a huge plate or a crater from a fallen meteorite, on which all the windows are located. Thanks to the angle of the slope itself and the concave plane of the facade facing south, it was possible to organize natural lighting in such a way that the sun's rays penetrate into each of the rooms of the three-level underground mansion. The front part also has ventilation openings and chimneys, which are hidden behind concrete panels, which help to maintain a comfortable microclimate inside the underground monastery.
The living area of the underground villa is hidden behind the oak doors provided for the exit from the barn. On the first level, there is a spacious living room with excellent views of the pasture, the wooded hillside opposite and the snow-capped mountain peaks. There is also a kitchen-dining room, a library and one of the bedrooms with a bathroom and a separate bathroom. To create the impression of a primitive dwelling, they did not particularly get carried away with decoration - concrete walls, stone floors, an abundance of wood, furniture of neutral colors. Only bright colors textiles and household appliances indicate that this is a modern home, where everything is thought out to the smallest detail.
Considering that the owners, who decided to acquire such an unusual country house, quickly realized that it would be an ideal place for organizing a mini-hotel, it was decided to make only bedrooms on the second floor. As a result, three of them represent quite modern apartments, albeit in a minimalist design, but with their own bathroom. But one gives the opportunity to completely plunge into an unforgettable rural atmosphere, where you can sleep to your heart's content on a hay shock instead of a bed. Although there is a mattress, it is also filled with dry alpine grass, and the window is located above all, so you can enjoy the picturesque views endlessly. But in the basement there are utility rooms, a games room with a billiard table and a comfortable seating area, and for those who like to steam bones there is a sauna.
Since the house is underground on 3 sides, it was much easier to organize an energy efficient home. Windproof walls, multifunctional glass, instead of the traditional roofing, a large area of land with grass, south-facing windows, heated floors organized by a heat pump, wood-burning fireplace, integrated heat exchange system - all this made the underground villa a passive structure.
Reference: Anyone can enjoy a secluded vacation overlooking the Swiss Alps, lying on a grass mattress or in the warm water of an exotic bath under the stars on an open terrace. True, for a week in the underground Villa Vals you will have to pay from 2, 1 to 2, 8 thousand euros, it all depends on the season.
