These two numbers will allow you to make sure when you select new drives, they will fit or not. The scheme is usually presented in the form of two components: for example, "5x4, 5". That is, 5 protrusions with a gap of 4.5 inches (11 cm).

Many European cars have a 4 × 100 bolt pattern (PCD). This means that their holes are 100 mm away from the next one. This parameter does not allow for deviations. For example, 4x98 and 4x100 may seem interchangeable, but in this case only 1 out of 4 fasteners will be correctly tightened, the rest will be displaced from the center, and the wheel runout is ensured. Sometimes it can be eliminated with special bolts with the so-called "floating cone", but it is wiser to simply avoid discs with inappropriate parameters. The rims you are looking at must match a specific pattern. It is good that many manufacturers offer several variations of the same model.

The next thing you can do is check the dimensions. There are many types and sizes of rims, and determining which one is right for your vehicle depends on what exactly you are looking for. If you are just changing discs for aesthetic reasons, you probably want to use the same size as currently available. Looking for an opportunity to improve acceleration, handling difficult surfaces or cornering - you will have to select structures with special parameters, with a diameter smaller or larger than the current one. However, keep in mind that the larger the wheels, the faster the tires tend to wear out and the more road bumps are felt while driving. Conversely, smaller wheels provide a smoother and more comfortable ride, but can negatively affect the vehicle's handling and flotation.

As with bolt pattern, wheel sizes vary from model to model and from manufacturer to manufacturer. To determine this, take a look at the diameter - in most cars, this number is usually between 15 and 17 inches. This parameter is indicated as follows: R15, R17 and so on.

If you do not have a passport / manual at hand, stretch your measuring device from the inner edge of one bead (the circle along the rim where the spokes end) to a point on the opposite side - this will be the diameter, or the size of the wheel on the vertical surface. It can range from 10 inches (25 cm) to 22 inches (56 cm) or even more, depending on the vehicle. If conditions permit, it is better to measure the wheel while it is lying down - this will facilitate the process and reduce the chances of error.

To determine the total width, measure the distance between the outer opposite edges. It can be up to eight inches, but is usually smaller, and is labeled with the letter J (say, 5J is a five-inch wide disc). Remember that rim width is usually expressed in inches and tire width in millimeters. Just in case, write down the totals in both forms. If the disks are swapped for the same size, there is nothing to worry about. But for those that differ, you will have to additionally buy the corresponding tires: their width, although with a slight permissible error, is designed to be combined with a certain disc.

In terms of size, “larger” does not necessarily mean “better”. While large rims and wider tires tend to look more attractive, they can not only be geometrically incompatible, but also negatively affect ride quality and performance, which are key factors for a passenger car. Only changes within the limits specified in the manual for the car take place without unpleasant consequences.

The original wheel offset will help determine which rims will fit the vehicle. This concerns the position of the wheel in relation to the hub. To make it easier to understand, some people want their wheels to protrude outside the car body. Then the bias is said to be negative.

Most often, the wheels are installed with a negative overhang at the rear. When positive, the tire sits closer to the body, deeper in the wheel arch. Negative offset can look cool, but it can lead to increased tire friction and premature damage, which means replacing sooner than necessary.

In addition, if the discs have a positive offset, the tires sitting on them can interfere with the operation of the brakes and / or the suspension system, stimulate accelerated wear of the bearings and the entire chassis. You want a rim that makes the tires sit right in the middle, in a neutral position. It would be a good idea to talk to a mechanic who can help determine the correct offset and find the right discs.

If this parameter, denoted by the letter "D", turns out to be less than the prescribed value, the disk will not fit, and if it is more, then special centering rings will have to be added to avoid beating.

They have many advantages, including a low price list, and only two disadvantages - heavy weight and mediocre design.

Thanks to it, designers can create more complex designs and experiment with finishes. However, casting creates pores that can lead to cracks. Of course, modern restoration technologies make it possible to bring parts to a working condition, but the original quality is not returned.
